OMFISH

Samara Nelson aka "Omfish," raised in FL, has been living and working in NYC for 10 years, in various artistic paths. The contrast of living in a natural, tropical landscape to the concrete jungle has informed their work significantly. Currently, the aim of their work is to critique the endless production of trash as a byproduct of hyperconsumerism in urban living under capitalism, while highlighting the beauty of collectively creating harmony with the natural world.

Omfish art focuses on using discarded/recycled material as the medium itself, utilizing scrap material, less toxic pigments such as watercolour gouache and water-soluble oils, and biodegradable material like jute.

Their body of work consists of painting, sculpture and rope art, working toward a waste-free artistic practice.

STATEMENT

Omfish is less of an artistic pseudonym and more an ethos to carry through life. Om; the sound of all creation and the universe, and I, just a small life within it. The name "Omfish" acts as a reminder that I am but one part of the larger collective. Omfish art strives toward the benefit of the collective while minimizing negative impact on the planet.

My art aims to hold a magnifying glass to the relationship between humans and their environment; to give new life to the discarded, turning trash into artwork... Reminding viewers of how strange and wonderful the natural world is and why it is important to adopt a mentality of appreciation and living in harmony with Mother Nature as opposed to the human tendency to attempt to dominate it. Omfish focuses on the use of art-making as a means of creating a more sustainable, balance between society and the natural world.

Our legacy can be mountains of single-use plastics, or acres of biodiverse forests...both will outlive us. It is up to us, to decide which we leave behind.
